Motocycles and scooters of the Greek Islands

If you know my husband at all, then this post will come as no surprise whatsoever. Whenever we’re on holiday, and he has a camera slung over his shoulder, many times a day I’ll suddenly realise I’m walking along talking to myself, because he’s stopped to photograph a motorcycle or scooter.

This has been the way since our honeymoon, and I’m used to it now. It’s even rather endearing. So this blog would not be complete without a post dedicated to the motorcycles and scooters that caught my husband’s eye, for one reason or another, on the “islands” part of our trip.

That’s all I really have to say, so here is a selection of motorcycle and scooter photos for your edification.

Tour day 2 - 29th March We lost an hour during the night as Israel changed to daylight savings. We lost the good weather too, and woke in the morning to low cloud over the Sea of Galilee and a light drizzle. It still looked amazing though, as we set off after breakfast, trekking up the eastern shore of the lake, and I found myself wondering where Jesus might have trod the ground............. or where exactly he walked on the water. Our first leg took us around the eastern and northern shores of the lake, through Rosh Pinna, past Tel Hazor, through the Hula Valley in the Upper Galilee, to Qiryat Shemona. This town suffered tens of thousands of rocket attacks from Lebanon through the 70s and 80s but the people stayed and endured and the town is now thriving and very pretty. Farewell Israel, hello Turkey

Tour day 8 - 4th April A transit day for us, as we farewelled Israel and said g’day to Turkey for a couple of days. It was a super early start, our alarm went off at 2.15am and our driver met us in the hotel lobby at 2.55am for the trip back to Ben Gurion airport. We had two flights with Pegasus, Turkey’s “digital” airline, whatever that means (probably Turkish for “budget”), the first to Istanbul, the second to Izmir on the coast of Turkey. Security in Israel was tight, as we had expected, and we waited for an hour at the first (of several) security checks. One of our group was called to the security desk during this time to answer questions about the group - where were we all from, did we all know each other before, where had we been, where had we come from before Israel, did anyone ask us to take anything in our suitcases, did we pack for ourselves - no wonder they told us we would need to leave the hotel 4 hours before the flight departed! It’s not just the destination, it’s the journey, right?? - part 1

It’s not just the destination........... or so they say, but the reality is that flying to Europe from Australia is a long proposition, no matter which way you cut it. I think next time we might choose to cut it slightly differently. It feels like we’ve been travelling for days. Long haul overnight flights might be a good way to get somewhere without realising it, but only if you manage to sleep for long stretches on the flight. I don’t. Still, for a 12 hour flight it actually felt like it went remarkably quickly, so maybe I did manage some longer naps than I thought. Anyway, the movies were good, the blankets were lovely and warm, the pillows were soft, and the flight was smooth. Win! To say that international airports are a melting pot would be an understatement. And international terminals in the Middle East seem, to my (limited) experience, even more so.
